Last spring, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey shattered a dream when it dropped SOM’s plan to clad the base of One World Trade Center in prismatic glass. The design element was meant to emanate “splays of color” from the building’s podium, but after several years and nearly $10 million spent on design development, the team found itself without a viable sample.
